Deriving its name from the word Pulum, meaning abundant water;
Palampur is situated at a height of 1220 meters near Dhauladhar Range just
35 kms from Dharamshala. This beautiful hill station was not known until Dr.
Jameson, superintendent of biotechnological gardens, pioneered the tea
plantation from Almpra in 1849. It was only after this that the place got
due attention from the European tea estate owners.
Popularly known as the tea capital of North India, Palampur is surrounded
by tea gardens. The British introduced this region as a tea plantation,
which has become one of the major tea producers in India. This region is not
only famous for its scenic beauty and tea plantations but also for its
architectural buildings.
Before being captured by British, Palampur was the local Sikh kingdom. It
was one of the most stunning hill stations of Jalandhar Kingdom.
Newgal Park is one of the major tourist attractions near Palampur. The Park
is on the way to Mata Bundla Temple. Neugal Khad (Small River) and Sourab
Kaliya Ban Vihar can also be viewed from the Park. Spread out in 200 meters,
the Church of St. John is another attraction at Palampur. The Church is very
near to the Government College, and was rebuilt in 1929.
Access to Palampur
Palampur is easily accessible from major cities of the state. Rail, road
and air network are available to reach the town. The closest airport Gaggal
is at Kangra which is 37 kms from Palampur.
Palampur is well connected by rail too. Narrow and broad gauges are
available to reach Palampur. Pathankot is the nearest broad gauge railway
station which is at 115 kms from the town and Moranda is the nearest narrow
gauge railway station which is at 4 kms from Palampur.
Palampur is well connected by road from major cities of Himachal Pradesh.
Dharamshala 40 kms, Kangra 40 kms Kullu 165 kms, Mandi 96 kms and Shimla 259
kms are well connected via road to reach Palampur.
