Summer capital of Maharaja Bhupender Singh of Patiala, Chail is a
small village near Shimla surrounded by lush green forests and snow capped
Himalayas. Lord Kitchener, the then Commander-in-Chief of British Army, sent
Maharaja Bhupender Singh in exile in 1891 and captured Chail.
Located at an altitude of 2250 meters, Chail is about 43 kms from Shimla.
Chail is known for a popular pilgrimage called 'Sidh Baba Ka Mandir'. The
temple has a special historic significance as its site was originally
planned to be the site for the palace of the erstwhile king of Chail. After
the construction of the palace got started, a saint told the king in his
dream that the site belonged to the former, for he mediated there. Upon
this, the king ordered the palace to be shifted elsewhere and got the temple
made on the site.
Another point of attraction at Chail is a Cricket ground standing at a
height of 2,144 meters. This ground surrounded by gigantic and deodar
forests was built in 1893. It is also used as a polo ground at times.
The Wildlife Sanctuary at Chail is popular for its rare inhabitants like
Ghoral, Kakkar, Sambhar, Red Jungle Fowl, Khalij, Cheer Pheasants and so on.
Access to Chail
Chail can be easily reached by rail, road and air network. The closest
airport is at Shimla 45 kms and Chandigarh airport is 120 kms from Chail.
From there, buses and taxis are available to reach the town.
Chail can be reached via road too. Regular buses are plying from Shimla,
Chandigarh and Delhi. Shimla is at 45 kms and Kalka is at 86 kms from Chail.
The nearest railway station is at Shimla which is at 45 kms from Chail.
This journey can be completed by Toy Trains.
