Khajjiar

Located at 6500 ft. above sea level and surrounded by dense pine and deodar forests, Khajjiar enjoys the title of ‘Mini Switzerland’. Khajjiar is a small picturesque plateau nestled in the foothills of Dhauladhar ranges of Western Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. Khajjiar provides an opportunity to enjoy the serene beauty of snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan ranges.

The wonderland Khajjiar is located at the midway of Chamba and Dalhousie. Tourists take the full pleasure of the drive of 20 miles from Dalhousie to Khajjiar through the dense forest of pine and cedar.

Tourist Attractions

The Khajjiar Temple : It is believed that the name Khajjiar is derived from the shrine of Khajji Naga dedicated to the serpent god. Tourists from near and far come to pay homage at this temple. The temple dates back to 10th century. The images and carvings on the ceilings and wooden posts are said to represent the Kauravas who were tied up here in the hideout by the Pandavas. The Kahjjiar Lake: Located at is an altitude of 1900 meters, The Khajjiar Lake is surrounded by lush green forests. It contains water all the seasons and is constant fed from the melting snow on the mountains.

Wildlife Sanctuary : Another point of tourist attraction near Khajjiar is Kalatop Khajjiar sanctuary. It is popular for its rare animals such as Black Bear, Serow and Pheasants. Deodar and Fir forest covers the sanctuary.

Access to Khajjiar

Khajjiar is well connected through rail, road and air network. The nearest airport is Gaggal airport, Kangra which is at 134 kms. This airport has regular flights from major cities of the state.

Rail is another option to reach Khajjiar. This place is also reachable by broad gauge railway station is at Pathankot in Punjab which is at 142 kms.

Smooth road is available to reach Khajjiar. Buses and taxis can be availed from Chamba (1½ hour) and Dalhousie (1½ hour) to reach at this picnic spot of Himachal Pradesh.
