Art & Culture in Himachal Pradesh

The cultural state of Himachal Pradesh apart from being known as the Land of Gods is also quite famous for its various art and craft forms. In this list of Himachal handicrafts, what tops everything is Thapada- a large embroidered shawl that is widely available in almost all the regions.

Kohana, a type of wall hanging is another specialty of Himachali artisans. The tourists visiting this colorful state make it a point to carry pillow covers, blouses and caps adorned with fine embroidery back with them as a memorabilia of their trip. Kullu, Sirmair, Kinnaur and Lahaul are the regions that are known for their embroidered caps. Apart from caps, Kullu shawls are also a much sought after thing for the visitors and locals both.

Falling in line with Kullu; Lahaul is another region known for its rugs that depict the traditional Pahadi designs. Stunning patchwork quilts, rag dolls and elephants made in the area are also quite famous souvenirs amongst the tourists and they also comprise a necessary part of a bride's trousseau.

Owing to its cold climate, Himachal is also much known for its woolen products. The wool used for these products is the Byangi wool. Dyeing and printing of fabrics is also a very famous traditional craft in the area essentially done by Farahada and the Chhiba tribes.
